The Incredible Family Car with an F1 Engine
197 miles per hour, 0 to 60mph in 2.8 seconds and nearly 800HP - In a minivan! This is the Renault Espace F1.
How did Renault create it? How much of the original Espace is left? And why did it tend to 'hop' around the corners?

In 1994, Renault were looking to celebrate 10 years of motorsport dominance in Formula 1 with the Williams team *and* to celebrate the success of their people-carrier, the Espace. So clearly, the obvious choice was to smash the two worlds together and create a racing Espace.
Renault decided to go ahead with the project in 1994 and one of the first things they did was to bring in Matra. An automotive design company who actually competed in F1 back in the 60s, and were the company to first produce the car that became the Mark 1 Espace.
The combination of Renault power and funding, along with the expertise of both Williams and Matra meant that the Espace F1 project was in safe hands.

So if one is lucky, one buys a Renault on announce and surprisingly IT HAS AN F1-ENGINE!
The warm property rarely melt because latex uniformly cheer amongst a unarmed island. ad, festive jet
Did Guy Martin know about this?
Everybody gangsta until Dodge builds a Grand Caravan Demon.
WHY the steel body??? Could've been a LOT quicker... (apart from being pointless)
Matre build the j11 and J63 model. On the j11 and J63 almost All the exterior is made of glass fiber. The Renault Company now cancel the espace Line because of low sales, thats is to me logical as what made the first great dont excist in the later models after Renault dropped Matre. I just love the J63 which also have Abs brakes and a funny standalone steering wheel airbag that makes its own power.
F1 engine.... So a full engine rebuild ever 50 miles?
Lotus 79 in the 60's you sure about that?? Just joking we all make little mistakes
I remember seeing this car in Michel Vaillant - Paddock as a kid. Didn't it was a real car!
i would pay to stay in the back seat to hear that godlike sound
Matra already build the Espace for Renault, since the car was their idea. The Espace it was based on has no steel body, but fiberglass. Though it had the looks, the car was actually just thrown together for the sole reason to make an impact, so it was very unsophisticated. And it remained just that, after it was only driven a few times.
I thought that van was hot shit on toast when I was a kid
to quote Neo in the Matrix: Jesus Christ, that thing's REAL?!? this was such a bear to drive in whichever Gran Turismo game I had it in that I assumed it was a joke the developers were playing...
So you're saying they made a drag car with an F1 engine?
Mad
Mercedes : AMG F1 Hypercar Renault :
Looks like a Tartan Prancer.
Dear God...
My fav car ever made lol!😍
This is utterly ridiculous. I love ridiculous. 😂
Now Dodge is doing a similar thing with their hemi v8 in their minivan
This is the most impractically insane car ever.
Errr....NO. In the U.K.; some cheap car performance magazine had some guy stick a V12, 27litre Rolls-Royce Merlin aero engine (IIRC used in WWII Spitfires) in a Rover SD1.....
So they took a lot of time and effort to make a car which is neither a good F1 car, nor a good minivan.
02:04, the quoted decade and car's model year are not correct. However, I'd agree that engines being used as an integral part of the chassis' structure was a mid 1960's development.
today they'd be much better off using an LS twin turbo, and getting a similar range of performance at 1/100th of the cost and hassle.
That's just bananas
Not really a fan of Renault or minivans.....till now!
Matra was the conceptor and the builder of Espace motorise by Renault.
it looks cool tbh
They better have the Espace in the next Forza game
The kind of van you use when you shop exclusively at Costco - since it takes about a week to start up, you might as well get month's worth of groceries each time.
Diving the kids to school.
I call bullshit, the body was carbon reinforced glassfibre
Needs a dampner like you talked about before that is now outlawed in F1
Gran turismo 2.
The kids would never be late for school again, as long as the pit crew had warmed it up first 😂 I love this car and first saw it in Gran Turismo as a kid.
Hold up this is real I thought it was a beamng drive project
nobody: Soccer moms when they’re about to be late to their kids soccer practice: *Haha f-1 engine go BRRRRRRRRRRR*
They should have rally raced it,
Now THAT'S a mad car!
Wifey: "Honey, the kids will be late at school...." Me:
I remember when that thing came out. I didn't remember it was an espace, but I knew it was Renault F1. One crazy car
Ford had a F1 Transit🙈
Build vans with f1 motors it will sell in the market big before drones come
A quand le vultech sur le différentiel ?
imagines if this was used as an actual family car, 2 kids in backseat bouncing up and down in excitement "YAY daddy! FASTER! FASTER! FASTER! YAYYYYY!" Having the engine exposed in that position would however make for a totally deafening ride without really good hearing protection. The F1 engine scream would be just insane in there!
id like to have an F1 engine (V8) in my Chevy S10 !!!
What is this initial D
That’s the one van where I won’t be fighting to get the back seats. That exposed engine, jeez.
Escape F1 who remember Gran Turismo ?
The womanly utensil quickly call because flame apparently sail down a wistful instrument. efficient, common gore-tex
I want one !
"Lotus 79 from the mid 60's" What?
We need this in fh4
Interestingly, the original Éspace was not entirely steel bodied, it had a composite upper section to save weight.
It’s almost about as crazy as seeing sonic the hedgehog race along side your F1 car that costed over 2 million dollars
AT 5:15, IS THAT ALAIN PROST DRIVING THE VAN?
Gt2,,they need to put it in forza to take on ford supervan
It was designed aiming to become the next pace cars. Tired to see those slow Mercedes.
I was lucky enough to have see the Espace F1 being driven at Silverstone. It sounds amazing in person.
if i’m not mistaking, and i’m pretty sure i’m not , the LOTUS 79 was built in the late 70s not in 60s , yes ? no? , and Matra raced in F1 in the 70s , i’m not sure if they actually raced in the 60s . enjoyed the video , crazy crazy vehicle
I used to drive the Espace F1 in gran Turismo
I've always wondered! GT2 ftw
The renault espace was the car that my dad owned when i was a child
FaSter ThaN a Sf1000
This wouldn't be practical. F1 are light, the engine doesn't need a lot of power to accelerate. Put it in a family car and its slow. Also one other thing I would like to add is I have no idea what the hell im talking about.
Think Matra built at least a large portion of road going Espaces.
A Tesla has faster acceleration
* Ess-pa-ché
Hilarious 🤣
Thanks for the video. Greeting from France :)
basically a maxed out family car in a car game. got it fam
So it wasnt realyy an Espace :D
I'm sure I read a quote from Damon where he said it was uncomfortably loud to drive. Although he may have been talking about the Cleo with the F1 engine.
ithomes.info/net/1ctvusibpX9loo4/video
I like the 1971 Ford Transit Supervan a bit more, sounds better too with that Gurney-Weslake V8.
BAAAH HAAA HAAA HAAA HAAA HAAA HAAA
not long until even america switches to the non-retord measurement system
My stock Astro van can smoke that car.... LoL 🤣
2:42 Driving kids to school, engine blows up Dad: What the #@%& just happened? Kid in back seat: Sorry dad, just spilled my drink in the engine. This may be a minivan, but I don't get the sense it would be a good daily.
Would have been nice to actually hear the car....sometimes less is best as in less talking
I want/ need this minivan!!!!!!
This is the most american thing europe has accomplished
Does Renault sell cars exclusively through PR stunts?
I like the wheels
I actually got to see this thing some 13 years ago at the matra museum, looked amazing
You hear an F1 engine, but there is a minivan on the track ... *head explodes*
Man that van is so ridiculous that it had me rolling when I saw it’s incredible acceleration and that classic v10 sound in a van’s body. Its super sick actually!
👋 Take a look at the espace F1 at Matra on my french homie channel👍: ithomes.info/net/vbOlvcmnbGSWZIY/video
That Senna Lotus was literally dancing through the corners
Omg ! I wanted to see and listened the car and the only thing that i saw and herd it was you talking all the time... 🤦🏻
I imagine that engine is not very happy about all this.
I saw this car in the Renault showroom on the Champs-Élysées in Paris, IIRC in September 2002. They had it there, because they were promoting the new Espace and the Avantime. It looks quite impressive (for a minivan), and the dashboard is *not quite* like that of a normal car. It's funny to walk down this avenue with all its haute couture, and then you come across this madness.
you could get this on Gran Tourismo 1 or 2 whichever i can't remember
The second one. First one didn't have french constructors.
I’ve always wanted to see a Yamaha/Renault V10 supercar similar to the LFA but this thing is the next best thing lol (though no Yamaha involved haha)
One of the most incredible car ever made
a french guy try to recreate an espace F1 and look what Matra let him do ithomes.info/net/vbOlvcmnbGSWZIY/video&ab_channel=MovieCarsCentral
Interesting, what will happen if you'll put an espace engine in F1 car? "Box, box, we loosing it"?
Only for fun. Coming next year, Fiat Multipla 1000 HP !
